How UK traffic lights actually work — beyond red-amber-green

The standard full cycle (for a single direction) is:

Why “flashing amber” means something completely different at pedestrian crossings

At a pelican crossing, flashing amber means: you may go, but only if the crossing is clear. Pedestrians have been given a flashing green man to cross — and they get extra time after the light changes. So if you see flashing amber, you must check for people still crossing — even if they’re mid-road.

But at a puffin or pedex crossing? There’s no flashing amber. Instead, the lights go straight from red to green — because sensors detect pedestrians and hold the red until they’ve cleared.

And at a toucan crossing (shared by cyclists and pedestrians)? Same logic — no flashing amber. Green for both road users simultaneously, with sensors adjusting timing.

Filter arrows: what they mean, and why they matter for your theory test

But here’s what most learners miss: a green filter arrow does not mean you have automatic right of way. You still have to check for cyclists, motorcyclists, pedestrians crossing against the light, or vehicles emerging from side roads.

Crucially, the filter arrow often comes *before* the main green light — giving you a head start through the junction while opposing traffic is still stopped. That’s why it’s called a “filter”: it lets traffic “filter” through in controlled bursts.

Real-world example: the “green arrow then green” sequence

You’re in the left-turn lane at a T-junction. The signal shows a green arrow pointing left. You indicate, check mirrors and blind spot, and begin your turn — smoothly and safely.

Then the arrow goes out. The main light stays red. But now the light for the road you’re joining turns red — and your arrow flashes amber before going off. You’re fully committed to the turn. You carry on.

Now imagine the same scenario — but this time, you’re in the *straight-ahead* lane. The green arrow points left. You’re not turning left. You wait. Even if the main light goes green later, you don’t move until your own lane’s signal permits it.

This is exactly the kind of scenario the DVSA uses in the hazard perception test. A clip might show a car waiting at a red light — then a green filter arrow appears for the left lane. The car doesn’t move. Why? Because it’s in the centre lane — and the arrow doesn’t apply to it. That’s a developing hazard: the driver’s lack of awareness of lane-specific signals.

What happens when the filter arrow goes out?

Two things can happen — and which one applies depends entirely on the junction design:

  • If the main green light is already showing when the arrow goes out, you may continue — provided it’s safe and legal to do so (e.g., turning right across oncoming traffic only if there’s a gap).
  • If the main light is still red when the arrow goes out, you must stop — even if you’ve already started moving. Yes, really. The filter arrow is your *only* authorisation to move at that moment.

“Green means go — full stop”

No. Green means “go, if the way is clear”. That includes checking for:

  • Cyclists filtering past stationary traffic on your left or right;
  • Vehicles emerging from side roads without indicating;
  • Oncoming traffic when turning right — even if your light is green, they may have a green arrow too.

“If my light’s green, I can turn right whenever I like”

Wrong. Turning right across oncoming traffic is only permitted when:

  • You’re not blocking the junction (Rule 178);
  • You’ve given way to any vehicle, cyclist or pedestrian already lawfully in the junction.

“Flashing amber at a junction = I’m clear to go”

Only at pelican crossings. At all other signal-controlled junctions, amber means “stop — unless unsafe to do so”. Flashing amber elsewhere usually indicates a fault or temporary arrangement — and you should treat the junction as unmarked (i.e., give way to the right, unless signs say otherwise). The driver assumed flashing amber meant “go” — when it actually meant “treat as uncontrolled”.

How filter arrows interact with road signs and markings

  • Lane markings: Solid white lines separating lanes mean you must stay in your lane. If you’re in a “filter left only” lane but try to go straight ahead, you’re breaking the law — even if the main light is green.
  • Overhead signs: These often show lane-specific instructions — e.g., “Left turn only”, “Straight ahead or right”, or symbols matching the filter arrow.
  • Give-way or stop lines: Some filter-arrow junctions still require you to stop at a second line before entering the main carriageway — especially if turning right across a dual carriageway.
  • Advance warning signs: A sign saying “Filter lane ahead” or “Lane control signals” tells you to prepare — and to check which lane you’re in *before* you reach the lights.

You’re approaching a junction with three lanes. Overhead, you see: left lane — green arrow; centre lane — green light only; right lane — red light. Road markings show solid white lines between lanes. What should you do if you intend to go straight ahead?

The correct answer isn’t “go when the centre light is green”. It’s: make sure you’re in the centre lane before reaching the stop line — and don’t change lanes once the lights are in sight. That question tests three things at once: knowledge of filter arrows, understanding of road markings, and awareness of lane discipline. That’s the DVSA’s style. Nothing is ever just one rule.

Practising for the real thing — not just memorising

You can read all the rules in the world — but the theory test isn’t about reciting them. It’s about applying them under time pressure, interpreting video clips, and spotting the subtle cues that signal a developing hazard.
